SAMPE/IOM3 Annual Student Seminar 2008

The UK and Ireland Chapter of the Society for the Advancement of Materials and Process Engineering (SAMPE), in collaboration with the British Composites Society, held their Annual Student Seminar on 24 November at IOM3 HQ in London.

Nine students representing seven universities took part and all gave interesting well-presented talks. This left the judges with a difficult decision in selecting who to put forward for the European competition. The presentations ranged from raw materials (silkworm cocoons, binder activation, monitoring cross-linking and self-healing resins), through materials properties (Weibull analysis of fibre strengths) to applications (wind rotor blades).

Two students were selected to go forward to the European Student Seminar (prior to and during the SAMPE Conference/JEC Exhibition) to be held in Paris during late March 2009. They were Soraia Pimenta (Imperial College London) who presented ‘Micromechanics of kink-band formation’, and Jonathan Burns (University of Birmingham) who presented ‘A fibre optic acoustic emission sensor for damage detection in composites’. The third place (reserve for the Paris meeting) was awarded to Andrew Leatherbarrow (Loughborough University) who presented ‘Recycled carbon fibre/carbon-silicon carbide composites for friction applications’.

The judges were Geoff Gould (Surface Transforms plc), Roy McCarthy (a director of SAMPE UK&Ireland Chapter) and John Summerscales (University of Plymouth).
