$50,000 Grant Helps Power-up University of Calgary's Solar Car
Alberta Environment is helping students with a $50,000 grant for the University of Calgary's solar car project, to allow students to put innovative technology, including composites, to practical use.
The $50,000 grant will be spread over two years and will make Alberta Environment a gold-level sponsor for the project.
"I met the University of Calgary solar car team leaders at the youth environment summit I hosted in Kananaskis in mid-October," said Alberta Environment Minister Guy Boutilier. "I am extremely impressed by their leadership and dedication to this project. Their innovative work takes Alberta's reputation forward to the 2007 Panasonic World Solar Car Challenge."
Last year, the solar car placed first in its class and 10th overall in this 3,000 km event across the Australian outback. The car averaged a speed of almost 64 km/h over a period of two days, finishing in 47 hours, 15 minutes.
Dr. Elizabeth Cannon, dean of the Schulich School of Engineering said she is delighted the provincial government is continuing to support the University of Calgary solar car team. "The solar car team is one of the best examples of how students from different faculties can get together and apply the skills they are learning to exciting projects that showcase cutting-edge technology and environmental sustainability."
