Sika Introduces New Long Pot Life Epoxy Resin System for Drip Free Filament Winding

Sika Deutschland has introduced a new composite epoxy resin system, Biresin CR84, particularly aimed at filament winding.

Sika says the new resin system is particularly suited to the filament winding process due to its viscosity characteristics, good wetting and a very long pot life combined with a low cure temperature. Furthermore, Biresin CR84 can also be used in the hand lay-up process.

According to Sika, the Biresin CR84 system has not only good wetting properties but is also modified to reduce dripping from the fibres during winding. Sika says this ensures both high quality components and a clean working environment. The cured resin is tough and has good elongation to break. The potlife of Biresin CR84 with hardener Biresin CH84-20 is approx. 10 hours. This allows for working a complete shift without changing the resin in the bath. The resin system can be cured at only 70°C to give a glass transition temperature ≥ 80°C. Biresin CR84 has also been approved by Germanischer Lloyd and is non-toxic.

Sika has also developed Biresin CR132, a family of modular epoxy matrix systems suitable for the light aviation market. It explains that these systems can reach Tg values of over 130°C when properly postcured. As such they are suitable, for example, for the production of dark painted aircraft, so that despite the higher aircraft skin temperatures that can be caused by the effects of solar heating on the darker paint, the necessary thermal stability is guaranteed. Biresin CR132 resin is a hand laminating base system with 3 hardeners (Biresin CH132-2, -5, -7), which all offer similar properties but have different pot lives, from 60 to 210 minutes, allowing for efficient production of different size parts.
