Polyester, Vinylester or Epoxy: The Great Debate!
|
09 February 2010, Swansea University, Wales
The main topic of the prestige lecture will be a comparison of the most widely used resin systems in the marine business: polyester, vinylester and epoxy. The different roles of resin and fibres in a composite material will be discussed. The mechanical properties of the different resin systems when combined with various fibre types will then be covered, as will the influence that the different processing techniques have on the laminate properties. The latest findings in epoxy resin formulation and infusion processes will then be accessed. Finally, structural design examples of a number of sailing and motor boat components will be presented with particular focus on weight, stiffness and cost differences between the three resin systems. Discussions with the experts will be followed by a demonstration of the Swansea lab facilities. The evening is organised by the Welsh Composites Centre (WCC) to promote the awareness of composites and share knowledge, skills and best practice in the use of composite materials. |
